Growing up I had my troubles with learning in school. It wasn’t that I wasn’t a good student; I obtained decent grades and was generally a good student. What really hindered me in my school was the lack of “hands on” interaction with the subjects being taught. I really find myself to be a visual, hands on learner, so when dissections or physical projects needed to be made or done, I really excelled. Why wasn’t there more of this growing up? Could it have just been my school? Could it have been the lack of resources in schools then? Whatever the case may be, Technology is at the fingertips of this generation, literally.
When watching the Video Games in the Classroom video, I could only watch in amazement! Every child’s dream was finally becoming reality. To think that if this was implemented when I was growing up, what or where would I be today? The teacher talks about how engaged the students are and how hard they work to meet specific goals. While watching the video you can see how each student is fixed on the screen, interacting with what the text book was only trying to tell you. With a virtual world, the kids are able to go to places, that a text book will never be able to take you. While taking Anatomy in college, there was a program we had to use called PhysioEx. PhysioEx allowed you to interact with different muscles, blood, bones, and see how they worked. It gave you a way to see things in action versus only imagining what the book was trying to portray.
I think more classes should implement more interactive learning to not only give students the ability to read and obtain the information, but to further reinforce this info through programs, like Transform It! Hopefully, this could make a change in test scores, more in depth learning, and give that “real world” application to learning.
Using video games in the classroom to enable a learning for students is a great idea. I know that there is a lot of parents out there who would be against this thinking that students will not be learning anything at all if their children were playing video games in class all day. However, I feel that playing video games is something that would be greatly beneficial to the students who would be doing that. RPG video games, as well as other critical thinking video games can enable students to utilize their minds creatively as well as visually. Some people in this world are not audio learners where information is spoken and they listen to get it to sink in. It takes some people visual effects to being able to understand a certain topic. Adding a new aspect to learn that keeps up with today's technology is something that I greatly feel should be done in every classroom that has the means to doing so.
