VIDEO GAME ADDICTION

So, do you think people are actually addicted to video games?

In one of my classes we were watching a document on the advancements of technology. In this video there was a part about video games. In Japan there are 24 hour video game cafe's. This is a place open all the time with multiple computers that people can play video games on. Asians play so many video games that their parents are starting to worry that they are addicted to video games.

In these cafe's they have video game competitions. These competitions last days, there have actually been reports of people dying because they play for so long with no food and water that they cannot survive. To me, this seems insane! I like video games, but I would NOT risk my life for them!! There is actually a camp in Japan to send your kids to if they are too addicted to video games! They go to this camp and cannot use their cell phones or have computers. They camp and do other hands-on things to bring them "back to their childhood" and to hopefully make them realize they don't NEED video games!

Today, I went on google to see if I could find anything on video game addiction! The internet is full of articles and videos about how people are addicted! Have you ever heard of MADD? Mothers against drunk driving? Well, there is a MAVAV--mothers against videogame violence and addiction! I think this is crazy! Has it really come to the point that videogames are soooo addicting that people are getting outraged against it!

So, do you think we are addicted to video games, or is it worse in Japan and other parts of the world? Do you think we will ever get to that point over in the US that we have camps to help us get over our "addiction?"

  1. People can become addicted to anything that they enjoy greatly. If you are someone like me who has an addictive personally you can video games are addictive. It really isn't like a binge type of thing that I have got to play video games but I do find myself sometimes either killing plans or getting things done quicker so I can play them. I have never really broken a grave responsibility to play video games however I have made some relationships I have been in hit some rough patches due to them. They are something that take my full attention when I am playing them and that is something that I cannot help. I am not one of those people who when playing video games can be doing multiple tasks. I feel that people who play games such as (WOW) World of Warcraft, Farmville, or any other MMORPG can become gravely addicted. This and the lack of interest I have for those types of games are two reasons while I will never play them. I know of personal friends of mine who are addicted to those MMORPG for reasons that I still have yet to understand so in all I will say yes people can become addicted to video games as I have sadly witnessed it.
