According to the article Video Game Addiction, preteens are addicted to video games, and most do not find this suprising. Of course, people have been playing video games for years and years, most people love them no matter what your age, so is it suprising that they are actually addicting?
Dr. Charles Ungerleider while talking about video games states that "they're very compelling with increasing complexity, so a child becomes more facile, yet wants to know more and apply new skills." this makes sense, because if you are good at something you want to keep doing it, and if you aren't you want to prove that you can succeed and actually do it!
There are many different video games, there are games for fun, but there are also educational games. So even if someone you know is "addicted" to gaming, maybe it isn't as bad for them as you think. They could be learning something from the game. Also, maybe someone is shy and loves playing games while interacting with others, so if it gives someone somewhat of an "escape," and they find friends playing games, they it is healthy for them.
For the younger crowd, parents should monitor their children and make sure they aren't spending too much time with video games, but they can prevent this by giving the kids a schedule and only letting them play during certain hours of the day. So, until the point that video games interfere with your life, and prevent you from doing other things in life, I would say PLAY ON!
